Injuries and fatalities from truck accidents occur every day on U.S. highways. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Highway Loss Data Institute, the number of people who died in 2017 from a large truck crash has increased by 30 percent since 2009. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reports that there were 104,000 injury crashes involving large trucks nationwide in 2016 with the administration estimating that at least 145,000 people were injured in crashes with large trucks in 2016. Seventy-three percent of large truck accident fatalities in 2016 were occupants of passenger vehicles (cars and light trucks).
